Meal Replacements – are they right for you?
While meal replacements and shakes might be convenient, replacing meals isn’t going to help you get a handle on learning how to eat healthily. Nor will they maintain any healthy weight loss strategies for the long-term.
Meal replacements don’t contain everything you need when it comes to a healthy diet. Associate Professor Tim Crowe, an accredited practicing dietitian and nutrition researcher at Deakin University, says: “They don’t contain enough fiber, and they lack phytonutrients, which are beneficial nutrients from fruit and vegetables.”
When it comes to the pleasure of eating they also do not satisfy our needs. Humans experience an incredible variety of tastes, smells, and textures when eating food; and there are the social aspects of eating. Humans have always enjoyed sitting down together to eat real food.
“Shakes don’t address the social aspect of eating and people using them will have a hard time eating out,” Crowe says. “You can’t eat like that forever. Taste fatigue can be quite common.”
Why have meal replacements gained popularity?
In an ideal world, we’d all have the time to dedicate to preparing homemade healthy meals, in addition to sitting down to eat them mindfully. But given how many busy people are today, it’s not surprising that meal replacement shakes, bars and snacks have grown in popularity exponentially over the past several decades.
Time isn’t the only barrier keeping some adults from preparing and enjoying fresh food; the elderly and those with digestive issues (like gastritis, ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease) can sometimes lack the appetite necessary to eat enough calories to fuel their bodies. Additionally, some view meal replacement products as a quick-fix mean to Fast Weight Loss. If you fall into any one of these categories — you’re too short on time to cook fresh meals, you physically can’t manage to eat meals that contain enough of the nutrients you need, or you’re the type to turn to fad-dieting — you might be wondering if meal replacement shakes are the answer.
The answer is Meal Replacements are not suited to long-term Healthy Weight Loss Management. Meal Replacements are neither Healthy nor Likely to work as a means of lasting weight loss/maintenance because they quickly leave you feeling deprived, restricted, low in energy, socially isolated and full of cravings for food you like.
